Synopsis: A student production of Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice’ is halted halfway through, when the student playing Shylock is found dead backstage; stabbed with a prop dagger from the show and holding a note with the quotation ‘Neither a borrower or a lender be’. Lewis and Hathaway investigate and are mystified by the lack of grief felt by the cast and crew, particularly the show’s ambitious director who wastes no time in recasting the role of Shylock. Looking into the victim’s past, Lewis discovers that the dead student led an expensive lifestyle and was heavily in debt to fellow cast members and others. The case takes another twist when a second murder with Shakespearian overtones is discovered in the cellar of a popular bar.
