Airdate and time AU: Unknown
Original airdate UK: Saturday 4 April 2009 7:20PM - 8:20PM
Network AU: Used to be nine, not known now
Network UK: ITV
Synopsis: Three teenage boys break into the local haunted house daring one another to go further and further into the abandoned building. But the innocent games soon take a sinister turn when the house comes alive and a terrifying creature attacks them. In the aftermath of the deadly attack, the only survivor is arrested for murder but is never convicted. Years later, the hapless young man is freed from jail, but is still too tormented to confront what really happened. Meanwhile Cutter’s (Douglas Henshall) research leads him to predict that the next anomaly will open in this same ‘haunted house’. Jenny (Lucy Brown), Connor (Andrew-Lee Potts) and Abby (Hannah Spearritt) are sent to investigate and uncover the mystery surrounding the house.
The Camouflage Beast Revealed
The Facts: As a future creature this beast is completely fictional. It is clearly a derived form of primate and its design is heavily based on the Madagascan aye aye. So strange looking is this animal that native mythology holds it to be a symbol of death. The camouflage abilities that it is given do not exist in mammals but is similar to the skin colour control that cuttlefish exhibit.
Size: 1m (3.5ft)
The Fiction: The team is sent to a house where Cutter believes an anomaly will open up. It turns out that one opened up 14 years before and a creature came through and has remained hiding in the house ever since. This has led to the rumour that the house is haunted. What has helped it evade capture is its ability to instantly camouflage itself against any background.
Interview: Lucy Brown as Jenny Lewis
Last series saw the loss of Stephen Hart. Where are Jenny and the rest of the team emotionally?
As this is Primeval we are thrown straight back into it within the first ten minutes. But there is a huge feeling of sadness and melancholy with everybody and they are really struggling to find the energy to keep going
Some fans are still shocked by the decision to lose such a major character, how does Lucy feel about it?
You have to believe that this team is dealing with life and death in order for people to buy into it. As Jenny says to Danny Quinn: “I think you know we are not playing games here, people die and it isn’t a game.” That’s a really good line for this series because we’re at the business end of things now. Yes, people were really shocked when James (Murray) went but it’s important for viewers that Primeval doesn’t get too predictable. Who knows what might happen this series? It’s certainly getting darker.
How have things changed for Jenny in this series?
Oh, she means business. The heels are gone, and they have been replaced by some very no nonsense jeans and boots. Jenny is right in the thick of the action this time out and I’ve loved every minute of it.
Now it’s not just the team in mortal peril, but the public at large as well, as shooting on the production took over huge locations all over London. What was the standout location for Lucy?
For the first episode we did a week of night shooting at the British Museum which was just a real honour. I’d forgotten how amazing it is in there, especially come the witching hour and you’re wandering around after midnight with all these huge statues staring down at you. I do remember one particular evening, we were filming on the third floor and I needed to go to the loos which were located back on the ground floor. I came out of the lift and because all the crew were upstairs it was totally silent. It was about 3am - I remember picking up my pace to the ladies room.
St Pancras Station is another great location as we were filming in morning rush hour. I had to drive one of those big trucks on to the concourse as people were getting on their trains. I think pulling up and parking on camera in that situation was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do.
About Lucy Brown and her alter-ego Jenny Lewis:
Lucy Brown
Age: 28
Height: 5'7" (about 1.7 meters)
Place of birth: Oxford, Oxfordshire
Hobbies: Shopping, wine tasting, eating out, horse riding, skiing
She may look like Claudia from the Home Office. She may sound like Claudia from the Home Office. But she’s not Claudia Brown. She’s actually someone completely new. At the end of series one, Cutter returned from his disastrous mission to the past to find that Claudia was not waiting for him on the other side of the anomaly. Instead, a woman who looks identical to her is appointed as a new member of the team.
Meet Jenny Lewis: Jenny is a ruthless PR professional. She’s feisty, senior and she speaks her mind. Her job is damage limitation. She’s been brought in to cover up the increasingly public creature sightings. While the rest of the team accept Jenny, Cutter struggles to accept this ‘new’ Claudia. And he’s not the only one struggling to accept what’s happening. Anomalies, creatures from the past and exploding worms weren’t in Jenny’s job description and she takes a little while to settle into her new job. And if things weren’t complicated enough, she also started falling for Cutter, although she would never admit it. By the end of series two Jenny is well and truly one of the team, but her feelings for Cutter are left unresolved.
